Theodore Roosevelt once said, “The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.” Though these words were recorded over one hundred years ago, they still stand true, for we must learn history to strive for a better future. And what more effective way to do this than to join Benet Academy’s new club- the History Club.
The History Club, founded by sophomore Liam Hruby and junior Jeremy Konieczny, has already made history, though it was initiated just before Christmas break in 2025. The first of its kind at Benet, the club strives to teach all about the past—both its legacies and its quirks. Whether studying the impacts of Greece on the modern world or the fun—and strange—facts about US presidents, the club is a great opportunity to learn more about the world around us. The club meets every other Thursday at 7:15 in Mr. Heidkamp’s room, B403, and never ceases to impress—the dedication of both the presidents and members is evident. All are invited to join! As president Liam Hruby stated, “I love running the History Club with Jeremy because we are able to let students choose the historical topics we focus on each week and let them have a direct say and voice in the club. I would encourage anyone interested to join if you like history, trivia, and learning new things.”
Not only does the club encourage learning of history, but it also participates in history competitions! On Saturday, February 14th, members participated in the National History Bowl and Bee at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. The team did exceptionally well, representing Benet Academy and demonstrating its prowess in history topics. The club team earned over 1,000 points in the competition, correctly answering questions on topics ranging from pop culture to Ancient Rome to politics to geography and much more! The club plans on participating in more competitions in the future, and would welcome more team members anytime. As president Jeremy Konieczny said, “So far History Club has had an amazing turnout. We were particularly impressed at the enthusiasm of students to go beyond what is taught in the classroom and really do history. We’ve got some great things planned for the future like guest lectures from community members, history trivia competitions, and maybe even visits to museums (though this last one is a future goal). Ultimately, we want to do whatever the members of History Club want to do and are excited at the progress we’ve made and the opportunities ahead.”
