This past spring break, a group of Benet juniors and seniors traveled to Antigua, Guatemala, for a trip that changed their lives. They spent their time there helping build houses for the local community, learning about Guatemalan culture, and making unforgettable memories.
Junior Adele Rauduve was a member of the special trip. She describes that every day was different. When not building houses, the group spent days exploring towns and bonding with kids. She says that the group usually started the day with morning coffee walks. Rauduve explains this as “a great way to spend time with the others and the teachers.” She mentions that the building days were hard but worth the work because of the knowledge she gained.
Rauduve is extremely grateful for the experience. She talks about how it was eye-opening to not go on a typical vacation, but to see a country in a new way. She exclaims, “I really learned how to be appreciative of the things I have and see that everyone is so similar, even though we come from different backgrounds.”
Her favorite part of the trip was growing close with everyone through their common goal. She remarks how, at the end of the day, the group would regather for dessert. “Getting to hear about everyone’s day,” was, to her, “one of the best ways to bond with everyone.”
When asked if she would recommend this trip to other students, Rauduve happily proclaims that she would. She supports her assertion by explaining that it is a phenomenal opportunity to give back to others and begin looking at life through a new lens.
For those who want to change the world one little step at a time, the Guatemala trip is the perfect place to start. Through service and connection, newfound intellect is gained, making it a worthwhile experience many Redwings can hopefully take part in.
