The fall play this year, The Twisted Tales of Poe, takes a more unconventional route. It is a takeoff on the radio play made famous by media legends like Orson Welles. The actors are to stand on stage collectively and read their lines in front of a microphone. Although this may sound simplistic to some, the performers along with their director, John Leffler, are trying to bring a different and exciting experience to the table. “We will have scripts on stage, there is no blocking whatsoever, no choreographing, and no acting really besides modulating your voice,” says senior Kate Schiliro. The Tales of Poe will include fan favorites such as The Tell-Tale Heart, in which Schiliro stars, and a reading of The Raven. It will also include rather intuitive and practical effects throughout. “We’re going to have the sound effects on stage, like you’re going to see all of the sound effects. You’re going to have wind, muffled pillows for audio effects, opening and closing doors, and people going up steps,” Schiliro adds. Newcomer Jane Wagner, also a senior, comments that her experience on the show has been “interesting and enlightening.” With a show on Halloween night, it is hard to see how this Benet production wouldn’t be at the very least a different and memorable experience.
