Girls Track Finishes Off Their Indoor Season on a High Note

The girls track team attended the Fast Times Invitational at Lewis University in Romeoville on Saturday, March 24. This was their last indoor meet of the season, so the team wanted to end the indoor season on a strong note. The athletes knew they had their work cut out for them, especially since they were going up against many ranked teams, including Loyola. Our Redwing freshmen led the charge with some outstanding personal bests. One of the most notable performances was made by freshman Emily Spellman who ran the one mile in 5:19.83 minutes.

Spellman beat her previous mile record by 15 seconds. To put into context how large an accomplishment that is, a girl in class 3A only needs to run a 5:12 to qualify for the state meet in the 1600m (one mile). Emily was also the first freshman to cross the finish line in her race, placing 5th out of 22 girls. Her endeavors expand beyond track and could be seen during the cross country season where she ran a 17:57 time for 3 miles (under 6 minutes per mile!). Spellman was also a member of the cross country team that went to State this year. Another athlete who made a great contribution to Benet’s success at the meet was freshman Elisabeth Camic, who ran in the 800m. Camic was also the first freshman to cross the finish line in her race, placing 4th out of 23 girls with a quick time of 2:23.95. Right by her side during the race was junior Mae Tully. Tully finished with a time of 2:24.06, coming in 5th. Camic and Tully were both members of the State cross country team. Tully’s race happened to be a new personal best by 10 seconds. The fourth notable performance from this meet was sophomore Catherine Pavilionis, who ran the 3200m race (two miles). Pavilionis set a new personal best by over a minute with an outstanding time of 13:57.74. Now that the indoor season is completed, it is time for the team to work hard and show what they are made of in the competitive outdoor season.

The team has yet to attend an outdoor track meet due to poor weather conditions, but they are ready to race when the challenge presents itself. The girls track team is on their way to great things, and the head coach, Mr. Scott Brooks, couldn’t be more excited.
