Movin’ On Up: Boys Soccer To Play in Supersectional

The Benet Academy boys varsity soccer team won the Class 2A sectional championship on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Fenton. After a dominant showing throughout the tournament, the Redwings now advance to supersectionals.

Benet entered the tournament as a favorite: their 15-1-2 regular-season record was enough to give them the number-one seed. Fresh off of a regionals victory in which they defeated the likes of Plano and Kaneland, the Redwings had a lot of momentum on their side. They handily took down Sterling in the sectional semi-final with a score of 4-2. Given that Fenton had barely won their semi-final game, Benet was the favorite entering the sectional final.

The game itself was a close one, as neither team scored in the first half. A Fenton player had appeared to score in the 68th minute, but the goal was called back because of an offsides penalty. This was more than enough to motivate the Redwings. Soon after the would-be goal, senior Ben Kelly put his team on the board with about ten minutes remaining. This was Kelly’s eighth score in just four games. That goal was enough for the Redwings to walk away with the victory.

Benet now advances to the super sectional final where they will face Quincy Notre Dame on Tuesday, November 1, at Sterling High School.
