“If you’ve seen my starving children, feed them.”

Richard Proudfit, businessman and founder of Feed My Starving Children, heard the voice of God tell him this. For twenty-five years, Feed My Starving Children has been feeding millions of poor children in over seventy countries.

There are three kinds of formula: infant formula, potato (transitional food for children with sensitive digestive tracts), and the regular mana pack. These meals cost approximately $1.32 each, and the Christmas Drive donates money every year. To produce all this food so cheaply, Feed My Starving Children requires many volunteers to come and pack food. For eight years, Benet Academy has visited and packed food.

The trip begins with a visit to Portillos. Students have time to socialize and bond with one another over a meal before they package. Once they arrive at Feed My Starving Children, everyone is required to wear a hairnet; Mr. Chuck Schumacher says that his favorite part of going is that they make him wear a hairnet. Afterwards, students visit the packaging room. Mrs. Jackie Bedore describes how much she loves “the rhythm of the night”. Each table has people who spoon ingredients, weigh packages, and seal them. Often, tables engage in friendly competition to package the most food. Each table calls out a cheer of excitement each time a box of food has been filled.  This makes the evening fun but also increases the amount given to children.  At the end of the night, all are invited to pray over the boxes to ensure that the food packed with love makes it to its intended destination.

unnamed-4Feed My Starving Children is a wonderful way to get involved. Students are given transportation to and from Benet and enjoy dinner with one another. The competitive atmosphere and fun times help educate students on the poverty of the world. This a great opportunity to help the poor, even if one is intimidated by hands-on experiences. Answer Christ’s call and feed his starving children!
