Strong Finish for Boys Golf Team

The Benet golf team shot low in the ESCC Conference Championship. The team narrowly won with a final score of 309, beating Carmel Catholic by only 2 points. Seniors Jack Driscoll and Brian Moran led the team with scores of 74 and 75, respectively, finishing in 2nd and 3rd place. After winning the IHSA Regional Championship, the team then went on to the IHSA Sectional Tournament at Prairie Bluff Golf Course where the team scored 2nd place, behind Fenwick. Jack Driscoll (75), Brian Moran (76), and Quinn Shanley (76) led the team to victory against tough schools such as Wheaton Academy and Nazareth.

The team then qualified as a Team Downstate. As said by Coach Marty Gaughan, “This group of seniors accomplished something never done before in Benet golf history, by qualifying for the IHSA State Tournament two consecutive years in a row.” The team had a terrific end to the season, finishing 9th in the IHSA State Championships. The seniors— Peter Breen, Jackson Buckley, Jack Driscoll, Patrick Leach, Brian Moran, and Charles Schuster— have “left a mark on the golf program that both makes the past players proud and has set the bar high for our future players,”  said Coach Gaughan. With two of the six players who qualified for state returning next year, as well as a strong Frosh/Soph team, the future of Benet golf is bright.
