The 2024 Redwings Fight Cancer Campaign officially began on September 9, 2024. This is the second year of this event, and 2024 is a historic year for this memorable cause.
The Redwings Fight Cancer Campaign is a non-profit program organized by LIFT, Benet’s campus ministry, that sells t-shirts, sweatshirts, and hoodies to raise awareness for cancer. All the funds go directly toward the Loyola Medicine Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center, where donations are greatly needed.
When Mrs. Schwichtenberg, a supporter and donator to the Redwings Fight Cancer Campaign, was asked why this campaign is important to her and something that she would like to support, she replied, “This campaign is important to me because I believe in supporting the fight against cancer. I pray for medical advancements and think we must all do our part to fight something that affects so many people’s lives. With continued support, hopefully, there will be better outlooks and outcomes for all those impacted.”
This wonderful institution offers care for 27 different types of cancer and is located just west of Oak Park. The center opened in 1969 and has been working to further the studies of cancer and treatments ever since.
The Redwings Fight Cancer Campaign and Student Government have also partnered together for the “Tackle Cancer” varsity football game on October 25, where the Benet stands will have a pink-out night with the cancer t-shirts being predominantly featured.
The Redwings Fight Cancer Campaign has raised $5,310 for the Loyola Medicine Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center, and LIFT has sold 384 items. This is a monumental fundraiser, and the funds will surely take their programs to new heights.
When Deacon Weiland, Benet’s own leader of LIFT, was asked why the Campaign is important to the Benet community, he responded, “Cancer impacts so many people in our Benet community. Each year, we have teachers, staff, parents, family members, alumni, and even students who are quietly battling cancer.” He noted that “about 40% of the population will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives” and that, sadly, these statistics often make family and friends “feel helpless.” Deacon Weiland believes that together, “we can make an impact, and through this campaign, we can raise funds for support and research.” Most importantly, he emphasized that those fighting cancer “are not alone” because “Benet stands beside them in their battle.”
The Redwings Fight Cancer Campaign has had another successful year of fundraising. After a year with 384 sold items and $5,310 raised for the Loyola Medicine Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center, LIFT is hopeful and likely to continue this campaign for many years to come.
