The Benet Academy boys basketball team gets ready to face to play Nazareth Academy.

On January 27th, the Benet Redwings played the Nazareth Roadrunners in a critical conference game. The 22-1 Redwings looked to extend their conference record to 11-0, while the Roadrunners hoped to find some magic on their home turf to beat their rivals.

The Roadrunners, who have not won a game against the Redwings since 2008, looked strong in the first half. They found easy buckets in the paint and beyond the arc while the Redwings struggled to find shots against the Roadrunners’ 2-3 zone. Countless Benet Academy turnovers kept the game close, with the Redwings finishing the half with a slight 22-19 lead.

However, as the second half rolled around, the Redwings made it clear that the Roadrunners were in for a much longer night than they had anticipated. The Redwings exploded for a 30-0 run spearheaded by John Hopkins University commit Brayden Fagbemi, who was hot from beyond the arc. He knocked down six three-point shots and made countless fastbreak layups. With each Fagbemi three-pointer, the Nazareth crowd got suspiciously quieter as all of their hope for an upset win rapidly dwindled.

Benet Academy would win the game 62-37, and Fagbemi would finish with a game-high of 31 points, helping the Redwings extend their record to 23-1, as the Roadrunners fell to 8-15.
