We Went Together — Homecoming 2015

Some Benet traditions are time-honored, existing since before we arrived as freshman. Other traditions are just beginning; as they develop, we see the history of our school being made before our eyes. One such budding tradition can be found in the Homecoming Dance themes, which, for the past two years, have been inspired by classic films. The official theme of the 2015 Benet Homecoming Dance, “We Go Together,” was taken from a song in the movie Grease, a song title that perfectly summarized the communal feel of a truly memorable night.

Student Government usually decides the Homecoming theme over the summer at the Student government camp, though no official theme is adopted until all student representatives vote at the first SG meeting when school starts. The theme chosen this year joined the ranks of other memorable movie-inspired dance themes, including Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (2014) and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (2013). According to junior Abby Bitto, SG Dance Committee member, “The original theme was just carnival, but that was so broad we wanted to narrow it down. We remembered the carnival scene from the end of Grease and decided that it would be a cute fun theme for everyone.”

To get the student body psyched for the dance, decorations were posted all over the main halls of the school including several banners that were filled with the names of students. The same DJ as last year provided the music, playing some fun songs, including the traditional closer, Piano Man by Billy Joel. Available once again for use by dance-goers was the Homecoming photo booth, which proved successful in allowing students to record the memories they made throughout the night. Abby spoke on behalf of her Committee, saying “We realize that students won’t remember their math grade first semester or the score on their last test [after they graduate]. They will remember the fun times in high school. The school dances are events people will remember, and SG wants to make those memories the best they can be!” When this year’s homecoming drew to a close, important memories had been made by all. Traditions both old – Piano Man – and new – the classic film theme – contributed to this truly memorable occasion.
