Benet Academy is currently in the process of renovating their athletic facilities. As part of this, there are plans to upgrade both Baumgartner-Gilbert Stadium and the soccer fields next to it.
The plans to improve the campus have been a long time coming. Baumgartner-Gilbert Stadium was built in the 1960s but has not had any significant improvements since then. Therefore, the school has decided to enhance it and nearby athletic fields. The upgrades are divided into two stages, both of which are intended to be finished in time for next school year. The first stages of these improvements include adding a turf field, bleachers on both sides of the field, a scoreboard, improved audio and lightning, and a plaza outside of the stadium. The track will be replaced, making Benet a more attractive option for future track and field competitions. Meanwhile, the new field will host sporting events such as football, soccer, and lacrosse. Additionally, the improvements will be used for gym class and other school events. In the second phase, a hospitality building will be added. It will have bathrooms, concessions, team rooms, and a spirit store. Turf will also be installed on the soccer fields that are east of Baumgartner-Gilbert Stadium.
The new stadium will be able to accommodate many sports, which will allow for the continued improvement of the athletic teams at Benet. Freshman Jack McCarthy said, “I’m thrilled to have the new stadium built because it will allow us to better showcase our athletic program.” The new stadium will not just benefit athletes though; it will provide a place for all Redwings to showcase their school spirit.
The school is currently in the process of getting the new stadium approved by the Village of Lisle. After a few months of meetings, the Planning and Zoning Committee approved the plans. The school will meet with the village board soon, and, if they get approved, start construction shortly after that. All in all, there is a lot to be excited about with Benet’s new stadium.
