About 20% of the world’s population are affected by a loss of normal hearing. Unfortunately, only about 2% of adults are able to communicate with American Sign Language. This makes it very difficult for deaf or hard of hearing people to engage and participate in the world around them, and can increase feelings of isolation and loneliness. Fortunately, Benet Academy has a small but mighty solution – the ASL club.
The ASL club is a club that teaches Benet Academy students American Sign Language, which is a way to communicate with deaf or hard of hearing people using signs and hand symbols. As junior Cara Sturm, president of the club, said, “ASL club is one of the clubs people tend to look over when looking at the list of Benet Academy’s clubs. It is, however, one that should not be, as it helps students learn American Sign Language and communicate with more people while also creating an inclusive welcoming space for everyone anywhere you go.”
The ASL club works to teach all participants the language, even those with little experience. The club meets every Wednesday after school for half an hour, teaching all students the importance of communication. Sturm pointed out several activities that the club engages in: “In ASL we do many things, like watch movies in order to expand sign vocabulary. . . . While those activities help with college resumes and help with productivity to the club, we also do many fun activities! We made bracelets for events that showcase ASL and we do hand painting, and we even have donuts.” The ASL club certainly is a great beginning to learning sign language, and it encourages all to come join and learn something new! Sturm and all participants of the club would love to have new students join, as Sturm pointed out: “Come check ASL out and help Benet’s community become more understanding and supportive!”
