The Benet Academy Girls Volleyball team capped an extraordinary season by earning second place at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Class 4A State Championship. The girls were a powerhouse all season long, but fell just short of the first place title in the state championship match against Marist.
Held at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena, the championship brought together the state’s top teams in a battle for the title. Benet Academy entered the tournament with a stellar record and first place in the competitive East Suburban Catholic Conference, riding a wave of momentum after a dominating performance in sectional and super-sectional matches.
“We gave it everything we had,” said Junior player Brooklynne Brass. “We left it all on the court, and while it wasn’t the outcome we were hoping for, I’m really proud of our effort and determination this season.” The team’s ability to adapt under pressure and execute their game plan was on full display throughout the postseason, as they consistently outperformed top-tier programs.
Benet’s senior players, including Gabby Stasys, Ava Ledebuhr, Morgan Asleson, Aniya Warren, MariKate Ritterbusch, Sophia Pursley, Ellie Williams, Keira O’Donnell, and Taylor Kunka, all played their final high school game in the championship, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and leadership. “It’s bittersweet,” said Sophia Pursley. “We really wanted that title, but even though we’re walking away without it, I’m so grateful for everything this team has given us throughout these four years. We’re a family, and that’s what matters most.”
The second-place finish adds another chapter to Benet Academy’s storied volleyball program, which has captured multiple state championships in past years. While the ultimate goal of a state title remained just out of reach, the Redwings’ exceptional season has cemented their reputation as one of Illinois’ elite volleyball programs.
As the team reflects on their season, one thing is clear: these players have inspired our school and community with their grit, skill, and unwavering spirit. The future remains bright for Benet Volleyball, as underclassmen like Grace Jermak, Molly Welge, and Ellie Stiernagle, to name a few, prepare to carry the torch forward. For now, the Redwings can take pride in a season that exemplified the heart of a champion and a runner-up finish that feels like a victory in its own right.
