Mr. Ramon Marth, better known as Señor Marth, beloved Spanish teacher at Benet, is retiring after 34 years of teaching at the Academy.
His return to Benet was not planned, but a happy coincidence. While working as a social worker, he happened to run into Benet’s Spanish Department Chair. The two ended up having a full conversation in Spanish, and by the end of it, Sr. Marth had received a job offer for a part-time teaching position that had just opened. Sr. Marth had studied abroad in Spain, which led to him being bilingual, though he didn’t think he would end up teaching the language for so long. However, once he became a father, he got his Masters in teaching from DePaul University. Along with teaching Spanish, Sr. Marth has coached the girls soccer team for 9 years, and attended countless Benet-sponsored service trips such as the Appalachian and Guatemala trips. He has also been involved in supporting Logos, the senior retreat, since 1991, which has provided thousands of seniors with the opportunity to grow closer to God and each other.
The moments Sr. Marth will miss the most are the times of laughter in the classroom, working in the scene shop, and meeting students who always say yes to service. He also loves when former students share stories of how they use Spanish as adults and when the soccer team wins a game. He has taught each Spanish class (1-5), but said that teaching 2 and 5 have been his favorite. Sr. Marth stated that it is very hard leaving Benet.
This wasn’t an opportunity he was looking for, but he’s found himself cherishing his time here. In a similar situation, he has been invited to another opportunity, and though he wasn’t looking to leave Benet, he knows he must go pursue it. Sr. Marth has been a long adored teacher at Benet and his presence will be dearly missed. He encouraged students to volunteer their time outside and inside of the school, go on service trips, and was always more than willing to help students and communities in need. Sr. Marth wants to thank the Benet community for the wonderful years and urges all to find ways to serve outside of the building.
