The Benet Academy Scholastic Bowl Team was able to shine once again on the state and national level. Led by Co-Captains John Augustyn and Taylor Watson, the Redwings put up formidable competition to some of the best teams in the country. Despite having a losing record of 22 wins and 27 losses, the Benet Academy Scholastic Bowl team is widely considered the strongest among Catholic schools in the Chicagoland area, as it has been for the past three years. Key moments in the season included upsetting Waubonsie Valley, this year’s 2025 IHSA State Scholastic Bowl Champions, at a regular-season tournament, and losing to the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, the team with the most Scholastic Bowl State Championships, in sudden-death overtime. In addition, player John Augustyn, who placed 13th individually at the Individual Player National Championship Tournament to showcase the scholastic bowl team member with the most talents, was able to become part of the All-Sectional Team, All-State Team, and just barely miss out on becoming part of Team Illinois, a team that John has already been a part of twice.
Although the Benet Scholastic Bowl team had a regretful end to the season, with a fifth place finish at Masonic Sectionals as well as a IHSA Regional Semifinal loss to Lyons Township High School on the final question, Benet Scholastic Bowl this year set itself up for success through the establishment of the Junior High Scholastic Bowl. In conjunction with the Benet Academy Scholars Program and the Benet Academy Admissions Department, teams from close to a dozen different middle schools were interested in participating in the first-of-its-kind competition, which was supposed to occur on February 12th prior to its cancellation due to a snowstorm.
With John and Taylor graduating, rising junior Ezra Guzman and rising sophomore Peter Warren will be tasked with leading the Scholastic Bowl team as Co-Captains in the 2025-26 competition season. In regard to this season, team member Peter Warren commented that “This season was a lot of fun! We had a good number of victories, and gained momentum throughout the season! I’d encourage anyone who’s a fan of trivia to join the team next year!” The future of Scholastic Bowl looks promising, in spite of the many hurdles it must overcome to perform at a high level.
