After winning their conference division in a resounding victory against DePaul College Prep, the football team was able to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in five years. Boasting an impressive 7-3 record, Benet entered into Playoffs by winning their first postseason football game with a monumental 48-0 win. The following week, Benet lost to the #2 seeded Rochelle High School, who has a record of 9-1. Despite this defeat, the unique success of the football program this 2024-2025 season has many wondering what the Redwings have done differently. After talking to Benet’s very own, it becomes clear that the answer is quite simple.
The past 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 seasons ended early for the Redwings, each finishing at a 4-5 record. Looking closely, this year may seem like an outlier. However, one Benet coach thinks differently. Mr. Crosby, a long-time freshman football coach, reflected on his experience, saying that he looks forward “to [meeting] the freshman every year and getting a chance to work with them and develop their talent.” He explains that “this year is not a fluke, this the future of Benet football.” His position as a freshmen boys’ coach allows him to develop each player’s skill and ignite their passion for the game.
The players seem to share the same view as Mr. Crosby! Jack Getz, a junior at Benet and one of the varsity safeties, has witnessed the team’s progression first-hand over the past few seasons. Getz explains “There’s no better feeling than knowing all those 4:30 am workouts and late nights with no rest will pay off by being able to live out the dream of any little boy who plays football”. Getz is undoubtedly correct; The Redwings, in particular those of the Class of 2025, are living out the dream of every football player. Benet’s 48-0 win in the first postseason game has brought great recognition to the team from across the state. Other players sense “a special energy in the locker room”. Truly, the passion and excitement within the team this season is palpable. The Redwings have showcased their talents with great grit and precision, and their energy is hard to match. One fact is undeniable: The 2024-2025 Benet football team is a force to be reckoned with.
