The Benet Academy Redwings played an impressive football game against the Hillcrest Hawks on Saturday, August 31st. Benet entered the game coming off of a 4-5 record from the 2023-2024 season, while Hillcrest entered with a 7-4 record from their previous season.
The long and awaited game began slowly, with neither team scoring throughout the first quarter. Although, the Redwings made crucial plays that resulted in points in the second. In the first play of the second quarter, senior quarterback Ryan Kuibaki hurled the ball to wide receiver Luke Wildes, who received the pass with one hand for a 48-yard touchdown. The Redwings led the game 7-0. Not long after, Hillcrest answered and tied the game by scoring a rushing touchdown through running back Eremus Wright.
During Hillcrest’s following possession, quarterback Gary Bradley completed a pass to receiver Jacob Johnson for a 69-yard touchdown. The Hawks made consistent and dominant plays, leading to their 13-7 lead early in the second quarter. However, The Redwings reciprocated during the remainder of the football game. During the middle of the second quarter, Ryan Kuibaki launched a pass to Luke Doyle, who was tackled inside of Hillcrest’s 20-yard line. Senior Marty Radgowski then ran it into the endzone for a Redwing touchdown. Benet led the football game 14-13. Radgowki put on a show by scoring his second touchdown of the day after the Hawks fumbled the ball. The Redwings were up 21-13 by halftime.
In the third and fourth quarter, Luke Doyle put another seven points on the board and Joe Salvino scored a rushing touchdown. After the 35-13 win from Benet Academy, Kuibaki stated that, “second quarter we calmed down, and that’s when, you know, touchdowns.” Once the Redwings slowed down and took things smoothly, they started to dominate the game. The Benet football team is set to play their next game at home against Moline.
