For their Homecoming football game, Redwings flocked to the football field of Benedictine University dressed in the theme of “All Things Greek,” filling the student section dressed in togas. Families, alumni, and Benet students alike came to watch the Varsity boys take on St. Viator to potentially begin the season on a four-game win streak for the first time since 2017.
Michael Conway, #37, kicked off the game and thus began the first quarter of the 2024 Homecoming game. The crowd got electric when #7, Luke Doyle, caught a pass over the middle for a first down in the red zone. The Redwings got their first touchdown of the game when player #1, Martin Radgowski, gracefully completed a tuck and roll, landing him in the end zone. The crowd erupted into cheers, filled with a promise for this year’s homecoming game. Michael Conway sealed the quarter with a field goal, adding three extra points to the 7-0 game. As time expired, the football game was 10-0 in the Redwings’ favor.
Halfway through the second quarter, #7, Luke Doyle, ran a 70-yard touchdown right into the end zone. Doyle’s second touchdown of the night left the score 17 to nothing. With another outstanding touchdown, the Redwings brought the score to 23-0 to end the first half, a score so confident that dozens of upperclassmen began to leave the stands in exhilaration over being so far in the lead.
At halftime, Avions and the Cheerleading squad give remarkable performances. Olivia Cummings, a Freshman Avion, stated “I had so much fun cheering with my friends in my uniform.” This performance was then quickly followed by the Benet Academy Marching Band. The marching band led the crowd in reciting its fight song and had the crowd on their feet.
With a quiet third quarter for Benet, Viator brought the score to 23-13 with a touchdown and two field goals. Entering into the 4th quarter, Viator got yet another kick to bring the score to 23-16. However, due to the extremely powerful defense, this year’s team offered, Benet walked away with the win, the score unchanged. Overall, the game was a great way to celebrate Homecoming Week, where students, families, and alumni could share their Benet pride.
