Benet Academy Robotics is a club that helps give students hands-on experience in the field of engineering, as well as computer science. The students in the club are split up between teams and receive a game theme from Vex Robotics. The teams have to build a robot according to the theme given. On February 11, 2024, 4 Benet Academy Robotics teams received the opportunity to go to one of the biggest Vex Robotics competitions in Illinois, The Corn Field Clash. The Corn Field Clash was held at the University of Illinois Champaign.
Thirty teams competed at the meet from all over Illinois. The meet was exclusively for high school students, but not for high school teams. Some teams were not affiliated with a high school but were affiliated with a club team. During the competition, there are two different competitions, skills and division. During skill matches the goal is to score as many points as possible without another team trying to interfere. Division matches have the same goal as skills, but two teams are trying to interfere and another team is helping gain points. All 4 Benet Academy teams placed top 20 for skills, and 3 teams placed top 25 for the division matches. The meet was a way for the students to not only get experience but also explore the campus of The University of Illinois Urbana Champaign.
The team members were happy with the opportunity the competition gave, with one of the team members saying, “I’ve never gone to U of I before, and the meet gave me a chance to see the Engineering building!” The Benet Robotics team’s last set competition is March 9th. This competition provides the chance to qualify for state and to close the season well.
