The lights flashed on as the Redwings prepared to celebrate homecoming on September 8th. The Benet Academy Varsity football team faced a determined Immaculate Conception College Prep (ICCP) team, entering the game as 5th in the state and the 2022 State Champions. Benet possessed a 2-0 record, about 3 wins away from securing a playoff spot. With the season getting progressively tougher, the ICCP Knights would provide the Benet Redwings a much-needed test.
The game opened with an onside kick recovered by ICCP, giving the Knights red-zone possession within the opening minutes. ICCP scored on the opening drive and continued the energy to squash Benet’s first attempts at a first down. The Knights would go on to shut out the Redwings in the first half. In the second half, Benet was revitalized by the defense with a safety. In the final moments of the 4th quarter, Quarterback Ryan Kubacki and the offensive line executed a run play to add 7 to the board. The touchdown was the first given up by ICCP this season. The Redwings would fall 34-9 on Homecoming night, moving to a 2-1 record. Benet plays Montini Catholic next Friday, September 16.
In the stands, Benet students celebrated a beach-themed football game, packing the stands with their energy and school pride.
