Girls Varsity Volleyball: Senior Night
On Tuesday, October 8, the girls varsity volleyball team closed their regular season with
their last home game: senior night! The graduating class of 2020 has five seniors on the girls varsity volleyball team. They include: libero Hattie Monson, committed to the University of Notre Dame; defensive specialist Annie Sobolewski; outside hitter Sophie Gregus, committed to the University of Illinois; right side hitter Colleen McGuire, committed to UC Davis for beach volleyball; and middle hitter Maeve Nelligan. While McGuire took a year off to pursue her beach volleyball career, the rest of the seniors have played all four years of Benet volleyball. So far this season, they have led the team to number two in the state with only one loss.
To celebrate the seniors’ incredible work over their four years, the rest of the team had some surprises in store for the girls. The team decorated each of their houses and surprised them on Monday evening, the night before the game. They also wrote in chalk on the stairs outside of the Martins gym doors to cheer on the seniors. At the beginning of the game, each senior got to walk in with their parents, and they were given flowers. The gym was decorated with streamers and posters. Pictures of each of the girls flooded the hallways leading up to the gym.
During the senior night game, the seniors were able to mix up which positions they played; all five seniors played most of the game. Even with members of the team playing different positions, they still managed to win with a score of twenty-five to seven in both sets against Marian Central Catholic.
From here, the team hopes to go on and win the state championship. Caitlin Wepfer, a current junior on the varsity team, said: “We know we have competition coming up, but it’s going to be about overcoming those difficult games as a team together.”
On Tuesday, October 29 the Lady Redwings won the Regional Semifinal against Plainfield South 25-1, 25-21. The Regional Championship will take place at Benet on Thursday, October 31 at 6:00 PM against Plainfield Central. As the team continues post-season play, Head Coach Brad Baker and the seniors are planning to lead the team to success. Come cheer them on as the team continues their quest for a State Championship.
