Springing Into Song
On Tuesday, March 21 and Wednesday, March 22 all four choirs took the stage to perform their third of four concerts. This one, by far, has been the best of the school year. With the longest time to prepare, the choirs were able to master some difficult pieces.
When asked about this performance, choir director Mr. Brian Wand said, ” I am very excited to share this concert with everyone because the choirs are singing very powerful music. It will be the best concert performed in recent memory!”
The freshman chorus was the first to perform. There were a lot of fun rhythms in their pieces. The freshmen were challenged to project their voices and give the song power. “Tatkovina” was probably the biggest challenge because it was a Macedonian national pride song, and there were a lot of times each voice part had to sound strong while the choir was in split voice parts. This was a really fun song to perform because it was very dramatic. The freshman girls sang a song called “Closer to the Flame”. This song had hints of Scottish in its music while the genre of the song itself was folk. The ladies split up into three voice parts for this song. The other two songs the freshmen sang were religious songs glorifying the Lord. All their hard work paid off for the best performance yet.
The sophomore chorus were the next to perform. The chorus blew the audience away, especially, with the song “Bring Me Little Water Silvy”. “Bring Me Little Water Silvy” was an Acapella song sung by the altos and sopranos. Aavia Shetty (‘19) led the group in percussion while Megan Delaney added riffs to the song.
When asked about the experience of leading the sophomores, Aavia said, “It was an exhilarating experience to be guiding such a talented group of girls in a beautiful piece. I had actually done this song in my old school so it was a super nostalgic song for me to sing. We practiced on a daily basis to master the body percussion in order for it to line up with the rhythm of the song. The body percussion was a part of the original song so my job was to teach the girls until they felt confident about it. I was so pleased to see them connect with the piece, and it definitely showed in the concert.”
The Madrigals never fail to impress audiences. Singing all different kinds of speeds and cultures, the Madrigals sang songs from France and Brazil. Prior to the concert, Ethan Bayer (’17) said, “’Desh’ is going to be amazing!” This was the most impressive piece performed, just as Bayer said. The Madrigals smashed this song! The sopranos and altos shocked the crowd by singing drone noises, while the tenors and basses sang varying drum noises. It definitely was a memorable moment for everyone in attendance. Two other songs performed, “Haec Dies” and “Muusika” were absolutely beautiful. This group sings only acapella and is made up of juniors and seniors by audition. The Madrigals are always a highlight when it comes to these quarterly concerts.
As an anticipated addition to the spring concert, the Chamber Orchestra performed during this concert. They performed a few beautiful pieces with a wide variety of instruments from harps to violas. In addition, they accompanied the concert chorale in “Laudate Dominum” and a selection from “The Last Words of David.” Both were religious in nature and absolutely breathtaking.
The Concert Chorale tempted the audience to dance with their fun catchy songs. One of the favorites was the last song of the entire concert, “Ain’t Got Time to Die”. This song focused on praising the Lord with both actions and words all the time. This way of life permits no time to die. There were many soloists during the Chorale’s performance. Hannah Simon (’18) said, “The soloists all did very well!” A sense of excitement could be felt between the chorale and audience.
The audience was in awe of the talent of the upperclassmen for sure.
As always, the audience joined all four choirs in singing the Alma Mater to close the concert. This has been a wonderful performance for all the choirs, and there is no doubt that the next will be even better!
