Donald Trump is Sworn in as 45th President of the United States

It was an unprecedented day as Donald John Trump, a billionaire from Queens, New York, was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States. Jake Tapper of CNN began the inauguration coverage by revealing the income inequality that propelled Trump to victory in Rust Belt States, stating that, “The bottom eighty percent of income in the United States since the Obama Administration has experienced zero economic growth.” Despite the anxiety leading up to the ceremony, the Inauguration began without a hitch, and included former Presidents Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and the Democratic Nominee, Hillary Clinton in attendance. The peaceful transition of power would not have been complete without President Barack Obama accepting the legitimacy of the controversial President-Elect and guiding him throughout his transition. Following his swearing-in as the 45th “POTUS,” Trump’s inauguration speech, co-authored by controversial Breitbart News editor Steve Bannon, contained deep populist undertones. The speech contained sharp criticism of politicians, government corruption and globalism. “We are transferring power from Washington, D.C. and giving it back to you, the people,” Trump proclaimed to thunderous applause, “The establishment protected itself but not the citizens of our country. Their victories have not been your victories. Their triumphs have not been your triumphs.” Trump’s vision for the country articulated in his inaugural address garnered a polarized reception from critics and supporters alike. According to fact-checking website PolitiFact, “49 percent [of people surveyed] thought Trump’s speech was ‘excellent’ or ‘good,’ while 39 percent thought the speech was ‘fair’ or ‘poor.’” Overall, Trump’s distinct vision and the unpredictable political climate have set him apart as a unique figure in American politics.
