WHO RUN THE WORLD? GIRLS!
The Fall of freshman year can be a very confusing and stressful time. There are new teachers, classes, people, buildings and so much more that can be frustrating for a freshman to handle without a guiding hand. Having a Senior Big Sister to help them through their first year at Benet Academy is a huge help in the eyes of freshman girls. As freshman Megan Seranko said, “It is great to know that I have an upperclassman looking out for me.”
On Monday, September 19, 2016, pairs of freshman and senior girls gathered for a nice dinner with some entertainment at the Abbington Banquet Hall. Senior, Brielle Heraty, gave a speech to welcome both the senior and freshman ladies. In her speech, Heraty reminded all that freshman year is a transition year, and one should not worry too much about it. For the senior ladies, who “run the world”, Heraty reminded them to make this last year at Benet Academy their best. Afterwards, Heraty said, “It was a bit surreal to walk into Big Sis Little Sis Banquet as a senior. The night definitely made me reflect on the past three years and showed me how truly grateful I am for the Benet community. It’s a wonderful tradition, and I will without a doubt treasure the laughs and the memories from the evening for years to come.”
It was a very fun evening to meet people and take pictures. For dinner, there was the option of chicken or pasta for the vegetarians. The dessert was chocolate mousse! Once dessert was handed out, a few brave senior and freshman ladies participated in the talent show. From singing popular music on the radio to classic Broadway tunes, everyone was super talented and did a very nice job.
After it was time to leave Abbington, almost everyone went out for ice cream at Oberweis. There, a few of the girls danced in the parking lot to “Hoedown Throwdown” by Hannah Montana. Overall, the night was a blast. Freshman Isabella Johnson said about the night, “I think it was a very fun filled night, the seniors really bonded with the freshmen, and made new friends. I can’t wait to go back as a senior.” Knowing new names and faces to say hi to in the crowded hallways always puts a little pep in one’s step.
However, the seniors and freshmen were not the only ones who had fun that night. This year was the first year all the women faculty were invited to the Big Sis Little Sis Banquet. Mrs. Elizabeth Boland said, “I was happy I was invited to the dinner where it was a girl power environment.” It was cool for both perspectives of the teachers and students to have dinner together. The students were able to get to know their teachers a little better if they wished, and it gave the women faculty the chance to be a part of something so neat as the Big Sister Little Sister program. This tradition will not fail to live on, because who runs the world?!?! GIRLS!
