Welcoming a Winter Wonderland

Illinois has gotten its first real snowstorm of the winter. The blizzard meteorologists call Winter Storm Peggy hit the Chicago area on Sunday, January 31st, and continued throughout the night, resulting in approximately 10 inches of snowfall. The snow then resumed on Thursday, February 4th, with an accumulation of 2 to 4 inches. This increase in snow, when combined with rising temperatures, resulted in hazardous road conditions. Although the snowfall is coming to an end, the winter experience is not nearly over. This storm will be followed by a severe cold snap with projected lows not rising above zero until Sunday, February 14th. 

While this weather does provide us with a beautiful landscape, it also poses threats to drivers. The low temperatures have led to icy roads, and all that snow can be dangerous, especially on streets that aren’t as busy and don’t get plowed as often. Be sure to be careful while driving, leaving plenty of time to break and ridding your car of all snow before pulling out onto the roads. It is also imperative to be safe while walking, as sidewalks have varying safety levels, with ice and snow building up over multiple weeks. Be sure to have fun, but also be sure to stay safe!
