This Month’s Netflix Aesthetics

There aren’t many ways to celebrate this upcoming Valentine’s Day, so why not relax at home with a film and some hot cocoa? Here are some of the best things coming to Netflix during this month of love, romance, and relationships.

A classic pick for February 14th would be a romantic comedy. Choices include My Best Friend’s Wedding featuring Julia Roberts in her 1997 Oscar-nominated role as Julianna Potter, and the new Polish movie Squared Love, which (while not critically acclaimed) is still a lighthearted watch. The film, known by its original name as Miłość do kwadratu, shows our protagonist Enzo falling for the mysterious Monika as he begins to reevaluate his life choices. A feel-good teenage romance is depicted in the small town of The World We Make; two protagonists Lee and Jordan struggle in their relationship strained by racial prejudice. Looking for something more abstract? Season one of Love Daily is the perfect show for anyone searching for shorter, more believable stories as each episode follows the story of two couples. The anthology includes a wide variety of pairings like interracial couples, deaf/hearing couples, and both old and young couples. Not interested in romance at all? The highly awaited Firefly Lane portrays the friendship of main characters Tully and Kate, originally told in Kristin Hannah’s book series.

February is also Black History Month and Netflix definitely has an amazing variety of Black film and culture to watch and learn from. Take this opportunity to watch the final role of actor Chadwick Boseman as Levee in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Both Becoming about Michelle Obama, and Homecoming: A Film By Beyoncé are two films that document the role of strong modern women- just in time for Women’s History Month in March as well. If you want the best of both romance and black history then be sure to check out Loving which is based on the true story of Mildred and Richard Loving, whose case challenging laws banning interracial marriage went to the Supreme Court in 1967.
