Getting Into the Swing of Things

The Benet Fine Arts Department is home to many versatile programs that are filled to the brim with talented students; the Benet Jazz program is definitely no exception. Every weekday, a jazz group, whether it be the Jazz Ensemble or the Jazz Band, can be found on the stage in St. Daniel hall practicing at 7:00 a.m. with their director, Mr. Rich Alifantis. However, in the later hours of the night, the eight musician Jazz Combo can be found rehearsing with director Mr. Dan Burke for its next gig. The jazz groups at Benet had their first chance to showcase their initial two months hard work at the fall Jazz Concert on November 1, which was held in partnership with Lisle High School in their auditorium. The three groups, along with Lisle’s Combo, Ensemble and Band, alternated playing their repertoires. The Jazz Band kicked off the concert with standards such as Doxy, Tuxedo Junction, and Night Train. The combo showed off their improv skills by playing standards like Footprints, Pent Up House, and Minority. Finally, the ensemble closed out Benet’s portion of the program with Tow Away Zone, Secret Love, and Jazz Police. All three groups demonstrated exceptional musicianship and brought a fun energy to the already exciting jazz genre. The next concert in which all three groups will be featured is the Cabaret Concert, which will be held in the cafeteria on February 13 at 7:30 p.m.. The Jazz Combo will be playing in the Christmas Spectacular Concert on December 10, which will also feature the Wind Ensemble, the Madrigals, and the Chamber Orchestra. The Jazz Ensemble hopes to play a gig in this winter season as well.
