Pray, Work, and Sing: Mass Choir 2017

If indeed music is a high form of prayer, and Benet’s motto is “Pray and Work”, the Mass Choir certainly fulfills this maxim. For all of Benet’s masses, the student body is blessed with dedicated leadership from the young men and women who make up the mass choir. Seniors Ethan Bayer, Justin Smusz, Katie Ford, and Elena Baranyk are the directors in charge of making sure all goes smoothly. This, however, is no small task. They have been hard at work: planning, preparing folders, and leading rehearsals since a few weeks before school started. The fruits of their labors were seen (and heard) not only in the all school masses, but also several liturgies sponsored by the Mothers Club and Dads Club.

However, mass choir is not all work and no fun. If director Bayer (‘17) could sum up his experience with mass choir in one sentence it would be, “Mass choir is a group of dedicated musicians who want to help spread the love of God to as many people as they can by using song.”

Sophomore Liz Perez (‘19) shares this feeling of a loving community in mass choir. Her one sentence summary is that she has “been happily welcomed into the mass choir family, which is made up of intelligent, holy, and supporting students coming together to sing.” It is evident from these testimonies that as beautiful as their music sounds, it is truly the people within mass choir who make it something special.
