2017 Baseball Preview

The winter season has officially come to an end. As we bid adieu to the frigid, snowy days that we’ve become acquainted with over these past few months, we also welcome the beginning of spring. With this transitioning of seasons, comes the return of Benet baseball. If this year’s roster is any indication, then the Redwings should have an exciting 2017 season.

Benet has many key players from last season’s regional championship-winning team returning. The dynamic outfield duo of seniors Marty Dosen and Erik Jones will be gracing the Redwings’ starting lineup once again this year. Joining them in the outfield will be fellow senior Matt Kaufman, who saw the field on numerous occasions last year.

Benet’s infield is also a strength in their lineup. It is led by seniors Tyler Bautista, C.J. Birck and Mike Dunn, who all saw significant playing time last year. Junior Jack Schneider, who was the only player on last year’s team to play as a sophomore, joins them in the lineup, as well.

Although an efficient offense is important, it’s incredibly tough to win baseball games without a strong pitching staff. Luckily, the Redwings have just that. Returning seniors Steven Arrowsmith, Mark Moran, Zack Strons and the aforementioned Dunn all impressed on the mound last year. They will all look to build upon their previous success in the season.

Headed by Mr. Scott Lawler, one of the best baseball coaches in the state of Illinois, this year’s Redwing team is one of the most experienced and talented groups to put on a Benet uniform in recent years. Although it is unknown if they will live up to the hype, one thing’s for sure: this year is bound to be an interesting one for Benet baseball.
