Grammys 2017

Grammys+2017

Another year, another congratulatory set of golden gramophones. This year’s Grammy’s highlights include memorable events ranging from a fulfilled promise between two successful artists and a performer breaking her award on stage. Let’s take a look at the former.

Twenty-One Pilots accepted their Grammy for best pop duo/group performance and revealed to the audience a memory of them sitting at home watching the Grammys before they were famous. From that day, they had their hearts set on receiving their Grammy, if they ever got one, pantsless—and so they did! Both artists trekked onto the main platform fully clothed and then kicked off their pants once front and center.

A certain Queen who’s been relatively absent from the music world lately, Beyoncé, performed for the first time on TV since announcing her pregnancy. Her golden, glittering dress had people pointing and uttering ‘sun goddess’ within seconds. As a wise man once said, “Queen Bey will always be our light”. She took home the Grammy for best urban contemporary album and best music video for “Formation” but not the Grammy for best album of the year—which brings up our next highlight.

Adele broke one of her five Grammys. You read that correctly; she snapped the thing in two right before everybody’s eyes so that Beyoncé could keep half of it. In her acceptance speech, she dedicated her album of the year Grammy to Beyoncé through a moving statement that proclaimed her immense admiration for the other artist. This same woman opened the show with her hit song “Hello” and also sang George Michael’s “Fastlove” as a tribute to him. George Michael died on Christmas day of last year. During her tribute, she paused in the middle. “I’m sorry, I can’t mess this up for him,” Adele explained. She swore and then restarted the song, which she finished beautifully. Well done, Adele. Well done.

Other notable mentions include Katy Perry’s “Chained to the Rhythm”; on her pantsuit and armband was the word “persist”. Senator Elizabeth Warren might know a thing or two about that. Lady Gaga showed up to give us an intense duet with Metallica. Kudos to her for crowd surfing. The 2017 Grammys host, James Corden, kept the show going by singing a Grammy version of his “Carpool Karaoke”. And talking about energizing the crowd, Bruno Mars swept in wearing the iconic purple outfit to pay tribute to Prince, who passed away last year on April 21.

Lastly, we’d like to congratulate indie rapper and Chicago native Chance the Rapper for making history by being the first with a streaming-only album to win a Grammy. He left the scene with the award for best new artist. “Glory be to God,” he said before giving thanks to his family and hometown.
