Club Activities for the Day of Love

Benet clubs know how to celebrate holidays. The festivities for Valentine’s Day began an entire week early. The campus ministry group SALT kicked preparations off with a week of decorating boxes and filling them with cards and Hershey kisses for alumni of Benet. It was a thoughtful way for current students to remind their missed friends that they are loved and remembered at their high school, and it is a beautiful representation of the connected Benet community even after graduation. The Latin club also celebrated Valentine’s Day early on Wednesday with a before-school meeting filled with sweet foods and card making. Latin students carefully crafted cards that had Latin words on them and wished their friends and family a happy Valentine’s Day. It was an exciting meeting that gave students a creative outlet and a break from school stress in the middle of the week.

Aside from the alumni valentines, SALT organized a student talk after school on Valentine’s Day. SALT Witness, a focused section of the campus ministry program, has been organizing speeches and speakers to teach Benet students not only about how to see God in their lives but also how to be a witness of God’s gifts to other people. Juniors Hazel Oreta and Katie Hovland worked together to brainstorm ideas for Hazel’s speech with the goal of teaching students about healthy relationships in high school. Hazel’s talk included information on chastity, marriage, pornography, and God’s love for every person.

Freshman Marians put God’s love into action and exercised their creative minds by decorating Mr. Erik Hesla’s classroom. The girls cut out bright pink and red hearts, wrote quotes about love from the Bible and Saint John Paul, and hung the hearts all over Mr. Hesla’s classroom. While this act was seemingly small, it truly was a thoughtful gesture that reminds all of Mr. Hesla’s students of God’s love this Valentine’s Day.

At 7:30 p.m. on Valentine’s day, the jazz band performed a concert. All three jazz band groups were excited to perform in the second of only three concerts of the year. While most of the songs were not related to Valentine’s Day, the Jazz Ensemble played “My Funny Valentine” and the entire band dressed in pink and red to celebrate the holiday.

As Valentine’s Day activities draw to a close, the Benet community is looking forward to the next holiday- Mardi Gras- when SALT, Spanish Club, and several other clubs will bring back the festivities.
